Top 5 Songs of the Week, 6/7
It’s been kind of a slow week in terms of good joints I scraped together 5 tracks this week. This really could’ve been a list of two.
5. The Dream Feat. Diddy- Champagne
Why is this here?
Not because of the profound song content.
Not becuase of The Dream’s immaculate singing.
Because of Diddy’s verse.
Puff Daddy had the same effect on Wacka Flocka’s “Oh Lehhh Dooo Ittt”.
Ok, so the 1st couple songs here are about bubbly. I’m a connoisseur. Beyond that, this track is waaaaaay better than I’m Not An Idiot that other garbage he’s been putting out. Plus, it’s radio friendly.
Also, the big news is that Ne-Yo got engaged to his beard Monyetta. Congrats to the mystery trio couple!
Off of the upcoming Def Jam release Shutterbugg. Sometimes you forget just how good live instruments sound on a record.
Kinda makes me feel like I’m in Drumline again.
2. M.I.A. Feat. Jay-Z- XXXO (Remix)
The beat is tough, buy Jay-z verse it what makes it pop. Let’s be hooooonest (Drake voice)
1. Eminem Feat. Kobe- Talkin’ 2 Myself
Anyone who even remotely thought the Kobe featured here was
should be remiss choke themselves.
Talkin’ 2 Myself found it’s way onto my iPod (Via the “Test”) not even 30 seconds in. My only complaint is that Em did not release it sooner.
-Bonus Track-
Yes, please.

New Vid: Distant Relatives- As We Enter
I like the whole Distant Relatives thing. Every couple of years “a popular Jamaican” will move past Bobby Konders & Jabba & remind people that they like to smoke weed Reggae music.
Being a Caribbean mix (including Jamaican) myself, I grew up on the music, so I listen to the Brooklyn pirate radio, & Flatbush Ave. mixtapes. Needless to say I hate to see it fade away when the mainstream masses get tired of hearing the tune get ridden into the ground.
In this case, that won’t occur…because of a little known last name: Marley.

Distant Relatives, comprised of Nas & Damian Jr. Gong Marley was an idea easily born out of a purple-hazy late night studio session, laced with beef patties, quarter waters & Guinness Stout.
The results couldn’t have been better.
Take a look at the making of their 1st official vid:
Did they have to put captions on top of everything Jr. Gong was saying? It was not nearly that indecipherable.
Presentinnnngggg The World Premiere of As We Enter Here!

Boom!

We’ll Always Love Big Poppa

Last night, Brooklyn, (& Perhaps the entire Tri-state area) came out to celebrate the life of one of the best (if not the best) rapper in existence, The Notorious B.I.G.
Aside from the fact that Diddy, Fabolous, Jim Jones and Red Cafe all appear to be in a public school gym, it seems the event went (generally) well. I use the term well loosely because I heard that a couple of fights did break out, and there was severe overcharging at the door– $100 to get in. To a club. In Brooklyn. On a Tuesday night.
The celebration marked the 13th anniversary of the rapper’s passing. I still remember the cold March morning when I heard what’d happened. I’d of course, been a fan.
When I’d reported to school the next day, the slightly older kids were crying in the halls. Hard. I remember Kurt Loder’s voice over the visuals of sidewalks in Brooklyn strewn with faces of disbelief. It was amazing that as a little kid that one could love music as much as I did. Allow me to take you on a voyage from my memory vault:
Warning- In the days of Video Music Box, pre-cable, & living with my grandmother during the week…well, my after school activities were kinda limited. I’d sneak up to her room to watch music videos, & I knew every. single. word. Now does that make any sense for an elementary school kid?
One More Chance (Remix)- My favorite song for a loooong time, (just ask Nicole Vazquez!) & one of my favorite songs period. The video made my pre-teen ass feel like I was at a house party & even remotely knew what they were talking about.
Sky Is The Limit (Feat. 112)- LOVE this song. As one of the best videos in existence, it’s so freakin cute. Where the hell was I when they were casting that video? Where? Probably doing something stupid, like going to school.
Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems (Feat. Diddy & Ma$e)- Who in the hell didn’t like this song?? Must not have had a functioning vessels. For a project in middle school we had to select a song we wanted to translate in Spanish. Then sing it. In front of the whole class. In it’s entirety. Being that I can’t sing, I wised up. Guess what I picked? “Yo no se que ellos me quieren…”
Juciy- Who else could turn Mtume’s “Juciy Fruit” into a rap anthem? I would sing that chorus at the top of my lungs making up everything right after “Don’t let them hold you down, reach for the stars” and swore with conviction that whatever I was singing after that were the correct words. Problem is, it changed every time.
Big Poppa- Whoa. Ron Isely probably got out of jail for owing taxes because of this song. Not only did I excruciatingly want a hot tub at this time, but this was when I discovered Diddy, Puff Daddy,

and the root of what would grow into a longstanding crush on him. I pretended I was the “you and me could be friends” that he always referred to. I loved that.
Now keep in mind– I am reflecting on my memories from the music videos. Therefore all of the posts are going to be from the commercial releases. Can I go toe to toe with a Notorious B.I.G. lyric? You betchya. I even managed to keep my cousin’s grubby paws off my special edition B.I.G. CD. He took B2K instead.

All jokes aside, Christopher Wallace, a.k.a. The Notorious B.I.G. was an enormous talent who made legendary music.

Retro Jam! @ Madison Square Garden!

Ah, yes. Retro Jam ’08 w/ KRS-One, Rakim, Bobby Brown (yes, Crackhead Supreme), & my Favorite, Keith Sweat!
Big ups to my man Mike for hooking everything up!
So, I was a tad bit late, but it was ok.

Paul Anthony & Bowlegged Lou of Full Force hosted the show, & did a good job of it– they certainly kept me entertained.
Ain’t it always good to hear from them?
KRS One was 1st up, and of course, all the ‘Real Hip Hop’ Heads were in the house. U know, people that look like:

But his message was positive as usual and always refreshing to hear.
Then Rakim, who appeared to be madd bent came on the stage. Now I was led to believe this because he didn’t do much moving around the stage, but when he did,
Dat’s my songg tho!!!
It was about that time when they found
(Well, just Grandmaster Dee @ least)
Shall We Digress?
That was nice.
Then here comes the self-proclaimed King of R&B, Bobby Mothaf*ckin Brown. One word, many syllables:
Lmao.
He started off in a suit& baseball cap, but somehow made his way down to a half opened shirt. I understood why he had the hat on though. He proceeded to hump the floor in true Bobby Brown fashion. This was only followed up by—what else? His kids dancing on stage. Gotta love Bobby.
When’s the new season of Being Bobby Brown coming owt?
….And finally, thee Grand Finale, Keith Sweat!!!
Chiiiiilllllle, Can’t nooobody tell me nothin ’bout no Keith!
Now I am well aware of this man’s age, but his smoothness (which is paralleled then surpassed by none other than Denzel Washington and Barack Obama themselves) is undeniable. He’ll have his own post later. Trust me.
Now he wasn’t on stage nearly long enough, but his finale was ‘I Want Her’. Ohhh, but he wasn’t alone. Not only did Bobby Brown, Bowlegged Lou, Paul Anthony and Rakim come back to the stage, (not to mention that lil’ dude with his hair so slicked down it resembled
), but so did this guy:
Flava Flav. I can’t hate him, I don’t love him. This is confusing.
At any rate I had a fantastic time. I thoroughly enjoyed myself- but I still think Keith Sweat’s part coulda been a little bit a lot longer. However, It’s always good to see the classics performed, done by the origionators!
Say Cheese!

I Love Black Cinema: The Notorious B.I.G. Biopic Film
….And now, the trailer you’ve been waiting for since you heard they were even making this movie!:
Now I’m no movie buff, but I do want to see this. Ah, who am I kidding I love Black Cinema. Not to mention I had to do a double take of Derek Luke lookin just like Diddy.

Love,
