M.L.K. Day- ESPN Town Hall Meeting

M.L.K.

Here is a reposting of ESPN’s Town Hall Meeting- Image of The Black Athlete that aired on Friday night.

Filmed at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in ATL. If you’ve never been, go. No words can translate standing there.

During various [Insert Black College Extracurricular Group Here], we discussed this topic time & time again.  “The current state of Black [Insert noun here].” More often than not, these meetings turned preach-y & accomplished less than intended. ESPN did a good job of not careening onto that rocky road.

Pt. 1

Pt. 2, Starring Marion Jones’ hair:

Pt. 3

I really wish they’d use more than John Legend’s version of Wake Up. Certainly there is more uplifting Black score to choose from.

Pt. 4

Spike Lee was a great addition to this panel. The fact that his eyebrows are always up adds to his effect.

Pt. 5

Pt. 6

Pt. 7

I love Jalen Rose. He’s turning into that uncle. I also like that he says “afletes”

Pt. 8- @ 2:30 Wilbon hit it right on the top of Gucci’s Ice Cream tattoo:

Pt. 9- -The stat @ 6:24 is horrifying.

@ 10:05 Wilbon, again, makes a great point

Pt. 10

Those education statistics were dismal. If they were, indeed, a lie, go forth young Blacks, get educations, and disprove them.

The Republicans Are Really, Really Good At Making America Scared

Boo!

Halloween came a tad  bit late this year, when The GOP (not to be confused with DPG OR LBC) reclaimed the House, and pretty much all the land’s Governorships.

Yesterday’s midterm elections sent a resonating message throughout the country:

“We’re still scared of Negroes.”

And that’s really all the Republicans had to prey on in order to take this thing down.

Still reluctant to make the leap-the country- frustrated to the brim, hung on Barack Obama’s every word, a sheer promise of hope and change.

And it happened.

And it’s only halfway into his term.

What boggles my mind the most is that the U.S. seems to have caught a particular case of amnesia, forgetting that Barack Obama took office just under 2 years ago.  America was in a sh*tty, sh*itty seemingly endless abyss, and, 8 years ago (or, as I now like to define time, Pre-Bush Kanye West Remix) America was enjoying a “disposable income”.

But for those of you who are not on a 24-hour, champagne diet, these election results are harrowing as scary as doing Carrot Top. Who would you rather?

And you can’t choose Dustin Diamond.  And you can’t choose death.

What the Republicans did was genius–

They lost.

Were upset that they lost.

Let everybody know they were upset.

Then never let up on the attacks, temper tantrums. When a baby cries long enough, you must respond. And with the help of Fox News, succeeded in making Mr. Obama appear to be something he wasn’t.

At least New York didn’t elect Paladino.  My sense of urgency to move to Cuba is exigent heightened.

Pay attention. His crew f*cked us.

Operation Get Paterson Out Of Here: The Rent Is Too Damn High Party

There’s a Gubernatorial race going on in New York.

A simple vie for a political seat has turned into a night at Mandalay Bay.

But now, it’s no longer a sh*tty catfight, thanks to this guy:

He is Jimmy McMillan. Part ‘Nam war vet, Part insanity. 100% awesome.

He also bears a striking resemblance to America’s favorite vet,

I thought Cuomo had  my vote all sewn up. Now, my friends, we’ve got ourselves a race.

Michael Jackson- One Year Later

Who can forget this?

The helicopter wheeling the lifeless body of the world’s greatest entertainer into an ambulance, to be taken to the coroner.

June 25th, 2009– One of those unifying events where you remember what you were doing at the exact moment you learned of Michael’s passing.

Me? I learned through a phone call from my boss at the time. She was in Los Angeles when she informed me of a (then) rumor Michael died. I exclaimed “WHAT?!” & immediately flipped to CNN– as we all do to solidify things we hear  seemingly too outlandish to believe.  Sadly, CNN turned out to be a confirmation rather than a contradiction.

Days later I would find myself at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY to join in a tribute to the musical legend.

It was more like a celebration of his life, rather than anything somber. It  kept me from continuing to weep like a baby at this man’s passing Little did I know just how much of an impact his music had on me. Think about it. As an “80′s baby” (pardon the trite expression) I didn’t know a Michael Jackson-less world.

So I wrote this tribute.

Michael Joe Jackson Pt. 1

Michael Joe Jackson Pt. 2

Michael Joe Jackson Pt. 3

It’s now June 25th. 2010. A lot can change in 1 year– people, relationships, job/career situations, a BP oil spill, and music.

What do these 3 toolboxes have in common?

None of them were that big time last year.

Much of what’s been released in recent years have sucked, so I keep finding myself coming on back home:

One can go on and on here with Youtube posts, but anyone with brancells between their two eyes understands Michael Jackson has a legendary catalog of work.

(Never Before Seen Picture of MJ, A print of that will be one of 12 up for auction this fall)

Rock on, dude.

13 Year Old Takes Morehouse By Storm– Black History Month!

My sister Turkey haaaad to bring this to my attention.

There is now another reason besides math-doing Asians or

that you should feel stupid.

Presentingggg

*Drumroll Please*

13 year old Stephen Stafford!

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.bvblackspin.com/media/2010/01/stephen-stafford2-1.jpg

Not only is he completely adorable, he is Morehouse College’s youngest pupil.  A whiz kid at the age of two, he said while his older sister was 6 years old, she would play school with him– not realizing that he was actually learning what she was teaching.

By the time Stephen was in Kindergarten he’d mastered multiplication.  Most of us didn’t begin learning our “times tables” until 2nd grade.

You know what? I’ll let you read some more of this article yourselves, via Rockdale Citizen:

A year later, he had completed his first Algebra course. He finished Geometry at age 7 and Algebra 2 at 9.

When his mother could no longer home school him, she called Morehouse. The college agreed to allow Stafford to audit a couple of math classes.
“I made a 105 in College Algebra and a 99 in Precalculus,” he said. “That was sort of the test to see if I could stay.”

Are you aware of what this means? He got smarter than his own mother who was homeschooling him. Her translation:

“Can you put please this little smart ass somewhere?? He’s starting to outhink me.”

Today, Stafford is majoring in pre-med, mathematics and computer science. He plans to graduate from college at the age of 16 and continue his education at the Morehouse School of Medicine.

“I’ll probably be a doctor by the time I’m 24 or 25,” he said.

Stafford enjoys speaking at schools and hopes his enthusiasm for learning will inspire teenagers to go to college.

“College students are no different than high schools students,” he said, “It’s just the next step in school.”

When asked how the other Morehouse students reacted to him, he said, “At first they were pretty freaked out. They thought I was the professor’s son or something, like it was ‘bring your child to work day,’ but then I started answering questions in class and helping them with their math and I fit right in.”

My favorite line? “I’ll probably be a doctor by the time I’m 24 or 25″.

He doesn’t even admit that he’s a child prodigy The fact that he’s a sophomore is even better– he’s gotten the swing of this stuff while his peers are playing in the sandbox and his superiors are cheating off him during midterms.

May I remind you, I, myself, have run into this issue before:

http://msofficer.com/2008/09/13/only-by-the-grace-of-god-did-i-make-it-past-the-7th-grade/

May God Bless this little man because this is quite rad, even though I firmly believe that a college campus is no place for a child.

What are the ingredients to growing a super genius kid? I want to make one.

Hopefully this story has warmed you hearts on this snowy winter night :o )

Switchin’ Teams

It’s supposed to be all about Barack Obama today as we celebrate the 100th day of his historic presidency.  Yet somehow, it’s all about this guy:

Republican senator Arlen Specter (PA).  Yesterday he stole the spotlight when he jumped ship and abandoned his beloved GOP to rock out with the party lead by the most popular (Black) man in the world.

Obviously Princess Specter has received a lot of criticism because of the recent move, but to quell that, he voted against the final version of President Obama’s Blueprint budget, just to show he’s still got a little bit of that Republican swing in him from the past 43 years.

No matter what, there is just one more seat left to be handed over to the Democrats in order to have a clean 60/40% control of the house, dependent upon what Al Franken does w/ his slot.  Either way, Team Barack is still in control.

Or Maybe this whole thing is just a joke?

Since it appears that Princess has a little bit of joke in him…

Call it how you see it.
